Student Teaching
To become a teacher in the state of North Carolina, students must complete student teaching, also referred to as the clinical practice internship. We recommend that students seeking teaching licensure refer to the Department of Education Policies and Procedures Manual for detailed information on obtaining a North Carolina Standard Professional I Teaching License.

Student Ambassadors & Tutoring
AVID, or Advancement Via Individual Determination, is an elementary through postsecondary college readiness system that accelerates student learning. It uses research-based methods of effective instruction, provides meaningful and motivational professional development, and acts as a catalyst for systemic reform and change. Students can get involved in AVID and become tutors facilitating student growth in Asheville City schools.

Our faculty members are experts in their disciplines and support students through their journey toward teaching licensure. They enable their students to actively engage in issues facing today’s educators and facilitate their growth in hands-on learning opportunities and field placements.

UNC Asheville graduates, through their foundation in the liberal arts, are teachers with a broad perspective and passion for lending their unique insights to diverse groups of learners. They think critically, reflectively, and creatively and are committed to meeting the educational needs of all members of their classroom. They guide their students in active inquiry to become effective and productive citizens while also maintaining a care-based and empathetic approach.
Education graduates enter teaching positions at varying grade levels in the state, and some pursue graduate education to advance their careers in the field. A majority of graduates teach in Buncombe County, Henderson County, and Asheville City Schools. Over 40 UNC Asheville licensure completers have achieved National Board Certification.
